St. Mary brings Alcons to church

The church of St. Mary Bredin, in the historic city of Canterbury, Kent, has had an eventful existence. Over the centuries the congregation has seen many physical changes to their place of worship, but the latest building project has seen some of the biggest improvements yet, including the installation of a high quality Alcons audio system.

Originally founded in Saxon times, by the late 1800s the church of St Mary Bredin was an imposing and ornate Victorian building. However, on 1st June 1942 it was destroyed by a Luftwaffe air raid which devastated much of Canterbury and it wasnt until 1957 that a replacement church was constructed on a new site around half a mile away.

Happily the 1957 building is still standing firm and, unlike many churches, its congregation has seen steady growth in recent years. In 2008/09 the church undertook its latest building project, which involved making major changes to the main body of the building by turning the orientation through 90 from the traditional alignment to services being conducted from a stage on the long side of the nave.

An integral part of the project was to improve the church acoustics and provide a new, permanent sound reinforcement system, all of which was designed by Norwich-based Adrian James Acoustics and installed by R G Jones.

Previously the church had built up a rather ad-hoc system, mainly comprising small gig-style speakers on stands, says Ian Rees, the project acoustician for Adrian James Acoustics.
The church services are quite contemporary, often featuring a live rock band and the system needs to be able to deal with a range of audio sources, so the sound reinforcement had to be very flexible and able to be used simply or in a more complex way, as required.

To achieve this, while maximising sound quality for all uses, Ian specified an Alcons system comprising two mini arrays of four flown LR14 cabinets each side plus couple of BF302 2x 15 subs, all powered by ALC4st amplifiers.

The LR14 system was ideal for this application as speech is just as important as music in the church, if not more so, says Ian. With conventional systems, the ideal frequency range for speech falls in between the optimum frequencies for tweeters and drivers. But the frequency range of the Alcons pro-ribbon drivers is exactly right, maximising the audio quality.

(St.Mary Bredin / Alcons press contd)

Also, in a large reverberant space like a church, the directionality of the LR14 is very important. With the congregation seated in the round, we needed to achieve a wide (and real!) horizontal dispersion of 120 without problems, but without the vertical dispersion shooting sound up into the arched roof. We found that the coverage of the system was very uniform and predictable.
Another point which is very important in a church environment is that the system is relatively small and visually discreet.

Although this was the first time that Ian had specified an Alcons system for a project, he is very happy with the system and how the job progressed.

The team at Alcons was very helpful, easy to work with and always available when needed to answer any questions we had. Indeed, we have since specified an LR7 system for an installation in Liverpool.
He continues, Most importantly, the church is very happy with the system. It was a rare chance to put a high quality system into a church which is willing to make a real investment in its audio and acoustics. It was a very rewarding project for all involved.

Novations new SL Mk II Controller Keyboards with Automap 3 Technology ar

Novations new SL Mk II Controller Keyboards with Automap 3 Technology are Now Shipping

Novation is now proudly shipping the new SL Mk II range of Controller Keyboards featuring Automap 3 technology. With seamless support for Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic, Nuendo, Cubase, Sonar, DP, RTAS, TDM, VST, AU plugins and software instruments, the new SL Mk II is by far the most powerful controller on the market for any modern recording and performance set up.

The SL Mk II features over 70 controls including touch-sensitive faders and ringlet rotaries, backlit switches, and pads all tightly linked to the DAW/Plugin/Instruments via Novations exclusive Automap 3 Pro software. The SL Mk II lineup includes the 61, 49, and 25-key versions as well as a control surface only ZeRO SL Mk II with touch sensitive 60mm faders optimized for controlling DAW mixers in addition to plugins and software instruments.

The original ReMOTE SL built its reputation on high quality hardware and pioneering control software. The SL Mk II has some striking additions that set it apart from any other controller on the market. Every feature is designed to make mapping and controlling software quick and effortless.

Like all Novation keyboard controllers, SL Mk II is a musical instrument, not just a computer peripheral. A semi-weighted Fatar 'fast touch' keyboard is combined with a full DAW and plug-in control surface that visually feeds back all control information to the user. All knobs and faders are touch sensitive. By simply touching a control, all mapping information automatically appears on the giant 144 character LCD display. Back lit LED buttons and LED ringed encoders instantly show the status of controls. SL Mk II also includes full transport control, an XY "Xpression Pad", 8 drum pads, sprung pitch/mod joystick and a unique "Speed Dial" encoder, which enables the user to grab any parameter the cursor is positioned over. In addition to 25, 49 and 61 key versions, a keyboardless "Zero" will be available with longer-throw faders and a central crossfader.

Ultra-quick mapping of all 56 knobs, faders and buttons is managed by Novation's groundbreaking Automap 3 PRO software, which provides instant and intelligent control of all your music software. As well as extensive DAW control, parameters on VST and AU plug-ins can be assigned by simply touching the controller and clicking the parameter. Perhaps Automap 3 PRO's biggest asset is "Keystroke Assignment", this enables almost any QWERTY or ASCII keyboard shortcut (and combination shortcuts) to be instantly assigned to the SL Mk II controls - providing unprecedented DAW control. Automap 3.0 also introduces "Autoview", where the 'heads up GUI' (showing the current status of all controls) can be programmed to automatically appear whenever a controller is touched, then disappear upon release.

Focusrite : The end of a Red audio legend

After 15 years of outstanding sales, Focusrite are finally to discontinue the legendary
Red 3 Dual Compressor / Limiter

The Red 3 was launched in 1994, secured a TEC award in 1995, and went on to become an
industry standard worldwide. Almost every major studio owns, or has at some time hosted,
a Focusrite Red 3, famous for its ability to retain a natural, unobtrusive sound even
when significant compression is being applied. Red 3s are frequently placed over the mix
bus, applying an effect that Tom Lord-Alge describes as, kissing the Focusrite.

It could be said that Focusrite invented boutique rack-mount hardware. The Red range
brought sex appeal to the racks of professional recording studios. All Reds boast 1/2
thick burgundy red anodised aluminum fascias. The front panel features engraved section
grooves and styling motifs, (sculpted with diamond-tipped cutters), porthole meter
windows, anoprinted silver control text, silver-anodised, custom-designed, turned rotary
switch knobs and firm-response illuminated push-button switches.

The Red 3, as with all of the Red range modules, is hand-built, using the same circuit
topology as the original ISA130 module from the Focusrite Fort console. All Red products
feature relays using gold-plated silver contacts, sealed in an inert gas. The precious
metal means that all contacts are low resistance and the gas prevents any kind of
corrosion of the surface of the contacts, creating the most pristine audio switching
device ever designed utterly passive, zero-distortion caused and no FETs required.

The Red 3 features a proprietary Class A VCA design, fully discrete and balanced,
offering musical harmonic characteristics. In order to separate compression and limiting,
the side-chain electronics contain three VCAs in series to generate compression and
limiting control voltages, which drive the main VCA. The result is true compression
followed by limiting, rather than the more common characteristic of compression that
turns into limiting. The side-chain electronics are a feed-forward design ensuring superb
transient response without ringing or modulation. This allows effects such as
over-compression to be achieved; what Focusrite have described as infinity and beyond.

Phil Dudderidge, Focusrites chairman, comments;

The Red range radicalised the world of outboard signal processing with the novel use of
sculpted, extruded red-anodised metal work, encasing classic Rupert Neve-designed
microphone pre-amplifiers, Equalisers and Compressors, bringing colour not only to the
racks of elite studios around the world, but more importantly to their musical output. It
will be a sad day to see the last of these classics leaving the factory, but it can be
safely said that the Red 3 will continue to play a vital role in elite studios for
decades to come.

The last few remaining Red 3 units are available from authorised Focusrite Pro
dealerships across the globe.

Classic Focusrite VCA- based compression is still available in the form of the ISA 430
MkII and ISA 220 mono channel strips, both of which can operate as stereo pairs. Red 1, 7
and 8 units will be discontinued in 2010.

Meyer Sound to Host Audio Seminars in Mexico, USA, Canada, Germany, .....

Meyer Sound to Host Audio Seminars in Mexico, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain,
Italy, and Netherlands

Meyer Sound has announced its international education schedule for August to
October 2009, with seminars to be held in Mexico City; Toronto; Los Angeles;
Montabaur, Germany; Seville and Madrid, Spain; Duivendrecht, Netherlands;
and Osimo Stazione, Italy. Some seminars will be taught in the local
languages, including Spanish and German, and others will be interpreted in
real time by qualified translators.

Meyer Sound education puts heavy emphasis on the science of audio and
practice in live sound applications. The upcoming seminars will cover core
audio principles encompassing sound system design and alignment, line array
theory, equalization, delay, and acoustical prediction with MAPP Online
Pro. Other courses explore system measurement and optimization, FFT
analysis, filters and phase relationships at an advanced level with
practical reference to the use of Meyer Sounds SIM 3 audio analyzer.

Led by an instructor force of active sound reinforcement specialists,
similar sessions were hosted in recent months in Nigeria, Lithuania, France,
Spain, Chile, Australia, Hong Kong, and the US. Large groups of industry
professionals and students took advantage of the opportunity to further
their understanding of audio theory and engage in an open forum discussing
the challenges and solutions in touring and other live event applications.

Meyer Sound seminars can bring even the inexperienced users up to speed on
the most important subjects in audio, says Arturas Krasauskas, an attendee
of the Line Array Design and Application seminar in Lithuania. My staff is
now doing a better job at system design and alignment. In the long run, I
think these seminars put us in a better position to achieve customer
satisfaction and improve our business. It is also a great way to familiarize
with Meyer systems and really hear how good properly tuned systems can
sound.

Since its first seminar in 1984, Meyer Sound has expanded the scale of its
education program, including a growing international instructor base, and
actively ventures new ways to meet the increasing demand for high-level
training in sound reinforcement. In addition to the mentioned curriculum,
the program includes courses on audio show control with Matrix3 and the
popular Mixing Workshop by veteran audio engineer Buford Jones, as well as
the recently debuted Practical Training: Methods and Applications, a new
seminar on the techniques to set up systems quickly and efficiently. Meyer
Sound also partners with universities and industry organizations in offering
training and scholarship opportunities in conjunction with institutions such
as Spains ESAMA.

The international success of our program tells us that members of the audio
community appreciate the importance in continuing to hone their skills and
knowledge of the precision tools available to them, says Gavin Canaan,
education programs manager at Meyer Sound. And since the emphasis of our
seminars is on science, not on marketing, and on the real world outside the
classroom, we believe we are providing the industry with valuable
professional development that our participants can apply in their day-to-day
work.

East Meets West at Tokyos Cotton Club with Meyer Sound

In the mahogany earthiness and mirrored elegance of its decor, the Cotton
Club of Tokyo echoes its New York namesake, the celebrated Harlem venue
revered in memory as the premier showcase of Americas jazz age. A fusion of
a restaurant, nightclub, and live performance venue, Japans Cotton Club
reaches beyond jazz to embrace essentially all Western popular music styles,
which are rendered with intimacy and fidelity through a self-powered Meyer
Sound MICA line array loudspeaker system.

According to the Cotton Clubs sound engineer, Taro Moriyama, selection of
the Meyer Sound system was based in large part by the venues eclectic
musical fare. Our stage hosts an incredibly wide variety of music, and
weve found that Meyer Sound loudspeakers work well with any musical style
because they dont color the sound.

A quick sampling of acts that have graced the Cotton Club stage includes
jazzs The Crusaders and Ahmad Jamal, reggaes Third World, R&B legend Ben
E. King, sultry pop diva Rickie Lee Jones, avant-garde rocks Alan Parsons
Project, and country soul songstress Rita Coolidge. Jazz duo Tuck & Patti,
famed guitarist David T. Walker, and soulful ghostbuster Ray Parker Jr
have also performed in this music hall.

Moriyama designed the system in consultation with Acoustical Technical Lab
(ATL), Inc. of Tokyo. Accurate room coverage was assured by the MAPP Online
Pro acoustical prediction program. System installation was facilitated by
the Cotton Club staff, again with technical assistance from ATL, Inc.

Dual MICA line arrays of four loudspeakers each are augmented by four 600-HP
subwoofers. A quartet of UPA-2P loudspeakers provide stage-side fill, with
two more UPA-2P loudspeakers flown as overhead stage monitors. A pair of
UPM-2P loudspeakers serves the mixing booth.

Every time we use the MICAs, or any other Meyer Sound loudspeakers, their
reliability, high quality and thoughtful design surprise us, and help assure
a great musical performance, summarizes Moriyama.

The Cotton Club is located in Tokyos bustling Marunouchi commercial
district, between the central railway station and the Imperial Palace. More
information is available at http://www.cottonclubjapan.co.jp/en/.

Mythbusters Challenges Rifle Gunshot Legend with Meyer Sound Subwoofers

Mythbusters Build TeamKari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imaharavisited Meyer Sounds Berkeley headquarters as part of their quest to verify the claim that a Russian-made SKS rifle could be set off by the vibration of a high-powered subwoofer.

Mythbusters often calls on Meyer Sound when it comes to investigating audio-related myths. The show, which features a team of five special effects and science experts who put some of the most outrageous urban legends to the test, has turned to Meyer Sound to prove or debunk such popular claims as a ducks quack not echoing, the human voice breaking glass, or the existence of the dreaded Brown Note.

While the Brown Note episode called for modifying electronics to accept frequencies well below the normal operating range, this time the test involved four of Meyer Sounds 600-HP compact high-power subwoofers. Two subwoofers per side were stacked in Meyer Sounds six-inch thick concrete isolation chamber, and driven far beyond their typical usage patterns, well beyond pain threshold.

This was an interesting episode because we were tasked with moving a physical object with a substantial amount of force, using vibrating air (sound) to move a piece of metal (the firing pin), explains Dr. Roger Schwenke, Meyer Sounds staff scientist. We used a lot of different signals in a wide range of peak-to-average ratios, from sine tones and sweeps to pink noise. I worried about somebody opening the chamber door at the wrong time and hurting our ears, but at no time was I worried about hurting the speakers.

In the end, yet another urban legend fell by the wayside as the attempts to move the firing pins with sound waves were unsuccessful. The only way air was going to move something with that much mass is if we could build up energy over several cycles, Schwenke concludes. That's fundamentally what a resonance is, when energy from one cycle adds coherently with the energy stored from previous cycles. What's great about this episode is that we got to demonstrate this simple principle: In order to have a resonance you need a mass (the firing pin) and a restoring force (like a spring). No spring, no resonance, no displacement from equilibrium. Myth Busted.

Whitinsville, MA, USA, August 20, 2009 - Hully & Mo Restaurant and Tap Room in Dallas, Texas, opened earlier this year, and it features stellar sound thanks to loudspeakers and amplifiers from EAW, a world leader in sound system technology. Gemini Light/Sound/Video was the contractor chosen for the project, and they selected a number of EAW products for the restaurant's unique audio system needs. The sale was made by Cowser-Lee Marketing, EAW's sales rep for the region.

Hully & Mo, named after the co-owners, former Dallas Stars right wing Brett Hull (a recently-announced NHL Hall-of-Famer) and current Stars center Mike Modano (the leading American-born scorer in NHL history), is Dallas' newest premier sports bar and restaurant. Located in the McKinney entertainment district, Hully & Mo is a sports-inspired restaurant reflecting a neighborhood feel with Texas Hill Country limestone, custom-designed black and Godiva brown leather booths, dark woods, open theater kitchen and tap room lounge with a courtyard view of fountains. The restaurant houses a front patio, a private dining room, a VIP leather booth to seat large groups and a curtained table offering privacy for national celebrities and special occasion diners. Televisions/drop-down big screens are strategically positioned throughout the restaurant, patio and tap room. The Tap Room Lounge offers a neighborhood-feel atmosphere with imported beers, specialty cocktails and a premium wine list served from the lounge bar designed with dark stone and warm woods. Hully & Mo strikes a delicate balance between an upscale dining environment and a spirited sports establishment, so the speaker system has to have enough control and finesse to meet the restaurant's audio requirements

The main dining area has 12 ceiling truss-mounted EAW SMS1990 Surface Mount Loudspeakers powered with an EAW CXA160 Power Amplifier. The SMS1990's in the main dining room effectively blend in to the background of the black ceiling while providing excellent coverage throughout. Additional SMS1990's were also selected to cover the foyer (one SMS1990 unit) and outsider patio (two SMS1990 units), where surface mounting was necessary. These three units are powered by an EAW CAM80 Integrated Mixer-Amplifier.

In the lounge and the private dining room, flush mounted speakers with high output performance and excellent low frequency response were needed, and several EAW CIS400 Ceiling Loudspeakers were chosen. The lounge has nine CIS400's, powered by a CXA160. The private dining room features six CIS400's, powered by a CAM80. A matrix switcher allows any one of eight DirecTV sources or a DVD player to be routed to any of the speakers in dining or lounge areas - especially useful for hectic game days.

Jerad Garza, Sales Manager for Gemini Light/Sound/Video stated, "This restaurant has one of the best atmospheres of any dining establishment I have seen, and the EAW units are appropriately powerful, elegant and low-profile. Because of the nature of a sports bar, several different channels of audio must be piped through different speaker channels throughout the dining room and bar without turning into a muddled mess, and EAW's SMS1990's and CIS400's provide the kind of crisp, clean audio that is just as classy as the restaurant itself."

EAW's JFL210 Line Array Chosen for U.K.'s Top of the Pops

EAW's JFL210 Line Array Chosen for U.K.'s Top of the Pops Comic Relief Benefit Concert

British sound reinforcement supplier John Henry's Ltd. notes the JFL210's
easy installation and great out-of-box sound

Whitinsville, MA, USA, August 17, 2009 - Britain's Top of the Pops (TOTP) has been a BBC institution since 1964, broadcast weekly until 2006 and occasionally as one-off specials in the years since. The latest such TOTP special, broadcast on BBC2 in spring 2009, featured performances from Franz Ferdinand, Flo-Rida, Oasis, Take That, Tom Jones, James Morrison and more, live from BBC's Studio 4, as part of this year's Comic Relief charity fundraising special. Aside from the significance marked by convergence of these great artists, a TOTP revival and the world-renowned Comic Relief organization, this program was notable for being the U.K. television debut of the JFL210 Line Array from EAW, a world leader in audio system technology. The JFL210s were supplied and installed by John Henry's Ltd. (JHL), a leading multi-media sound reinforcement provider for the entertainment industry in the U.K. and Europe.

"Rigging the JFL210 hangs was a breeze," commented JHL staff engineer Simon Panos, who looked after the audience sound for the show. "The studio hoists have a maximum capacity of 112 kg, so each hang of four including a flybar came in at a total of 109 kg, which made everyone happy. Additionally, once the four hangs were in the air, the sound was pin sharp and needed very little additional tuning. The FB121 flybar gave us the flexibility to rake the hang just how we needed it. The system was very versatile and had amazing coverage in spite of the cluttered ceiling space it inhabited."

Panos' fellow engineers Robin Tombs and Aden Gregory were equally enthusiastic about the system's hi-fi sound and ease of use, pronouncing it perfect for the job at hand.

About the JFL210 Compact Line Array Module
The JFL210 compact line array loudspeaker features a range of EAW's most innovative line array technologies within a mobile, lightweight package. It is an ideal solution for a multitude of small- and medium-sized applications, including portable and installed A/V as well as musician/DJ. Each two-way, full-range JFL210 utilizes neodymium drivers that provide optimum performance and tireless durability while also reducing weight. Two 10 inch (2.5-inch voice coil) woofers deliver tight, punchy low-frequency performance, while the 3-inch (1.4-inch-exit) compression driver is closely matched with a horn that provides precise directivity. The enclosure size, shape, weight, and rigging are optimized for ease of transport and handling. Enclosures can be pole-mounted, and arrays can also be easily flown, ground stacked or permanently installed.

AUDIO-TECHNICA CONTINUES ITS SUPPORT OF THE WORLD'S FINEST ATHLETES IN...

AUDIO-TECHNICA CONTINUES ITS SUPPORT OF THE WORLD'S FINEST ATHLETES IN VANCOUVER 2010

STOW, OH, August 17, 2009 -- Audio-Technica, a world leader in transducer technology, announces that over 3,000 of its microphones will be used at the XXI Winter Olympic Games, coming up in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in February 2010. The use of Audio-Technica microphones for the broadcast of the 2010 Winter Games marks the continuation of A-T's Olympic involvement, which has been consistent since the Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996.

Olympic Broadcast Services Vancouver (OBSV) is the Host Broadcaster for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, responsible for producing and distributing audio and video coverage of the Games. To generate an international production, OBSV will deploy all cameras, develop graphics, and capture audio at each sporting venue. OBSV will transmit this international production to all radio and television Rights Holding Broadcasters, who will adapt the signal for transmission on their networks. In this way, each nation will receive unbiased coverage of the event, thereby avoiding any national favoritism, commercial identification, advertising or interviews.

Olympic Broadcast Services Vancouver will use the AT4050 Large Diaphragm Multi-pattern Microphone and BP4025 X/Y Stereo Field Recording Microphone to create the 5.1 surround sound ambience at the Olympic events. In Vancouver, there are several different audio environments, each of which will present unique challenges for the broadcasters and audio engineers. For instance, in ski jump alone, there are three distinct surround-sound scenarios that will employ a combination of AT4050's and BP4025's: the start house, which is an enclosed environment; the preparation for and start of the jump, when the skiers are ready to go down the hill; and the jump in motion - when viewers start to see the crowd, the mixers try to blend in the surround sound of the crowd base as well.

The sonic details will be added by using a large number of Audio-Technica's shotgun microphones, including the 21.22"-long BP4071L Line + Gradient Condenser for outdoor and long-distance pickup in such sports as downhill skiing, figure skating and half-pipe sports; the AT898 Subminiature Lavalier Microphone with individual body packs in curling, operating up to 48 channels of simultaneous wireless; custom A-T boundary mics for hockey; and many more microphones.

"The sound of competitive sports is crucial, and Audio-Technica is proud to be a critical part of bringing the experience of the Games to viewers around the world," said Michael Edwards, Audio-Technica Director of Product Management. "When Audio-Technica began a successful relationship with the Olympic broadcasters in Atlanta in 1996, we made a dedication to the capture of audio in broadcast sports. Because of this, we have been given the opportunity to help improve the sound and reduce mic visibility in the process. As a result of our experience with Olympic broadcasts, Audio-Technica continues ongoing product development in order to meet the needs of professional broadcasters in a variety of settings around the world."

The Vancouver 2010 Winter Games will feature athletes from a projected 80+ countries competing in 86 events in seven sports, with media representatives covering the event for a worldwide audience of billions.

Low-end alterations, typically added by small rooms, are removed with better low frequency control
More consistent frequency response across the entire range
Tonal balance is restored, allowing for more accurate mixes
Room defects will no longer intrude into attention, allowing you to focus solely on the music while reducing ear fatigue
Work on mixes faster because you can be confident of what youre hearing
Achieve greater consistency of your music productions
Zero latency allows for tracking in an acoustically correct environment which produces more accurate sonic and dynamic range
Produce mixes that better translate to the outside world on multiple listening devices

The ARC System TDM features two plug-in formats: Stereo (support up to 48 kHz sample rate) or Multi-mono (support up to 96 kHz sample rate). For extra convenience, the ARC System TDM package also comes with native plug-in versions (RTAS, VST, AU format). The step-by-step setup measurement wizard will have you mixing in a corrected environment in minutes.

The ARC system is also the most convenient, unique, mobile correction solution for the Pro Tools travelling engineer. Now you can sonically treat your room everywhere you go, so you can finally trust the sound of your monitoring environment and record, mix or master comfortably in a listening environment that you will always be familiar with.

Arena Television Links the BBC with Optocore at Glastonbury

UK broadcast specialist, Arena Television, employed their new Optocore system to provide audio broadcast feeds for BBC Two and BBC Three at this years Glastonbury Festival. The systems were purchased for Glastonbury from Optocores UK distributor, HD Pro Audio.

To cover the event, Arena provided two OB Trucks for the Other Stage and the BBC Introducing Stage, a large VT truck for the BBC4 and Interactive and Red Button operations and two OB Trucks for BBC2 and BBC3.

The two OB Trucks for BBC2 and BBC3 were each linked via Optocore to the respective BBC2 and BBC3 backstage studios, each feed carrying presenters plus various bands' acoustic sets. A further Optocore run linked the two Scanners to provide full redundancy of the Optocore system. The Optocore systems consisted of 2x 48 in/16 out stageboxes, comprising 2x X6P-16 In, 2x X6P 8/8 and 1x DD32E with 2x DD4ME MADI Interfaces. These were then connected to Calrec mixing consoles.

Mark Reed, Arenas engineer at Glastonbury, remarked, We did a lot of research before Glastonbury, comparing all options. Optocore gave us the most cost effective solution with no compromises. In addition to set up, monitoring of levels throughout the event was all done with the Optocore software and the system worked perfectly with superb audio quality and reliability.

The compact size of the hardware is also very convenient and the system easy to deploy and set up, making it ideal for many of the events we cover.

Andy Huffer of HD Pro Audio commented, Optocore has often been incorrectly perceived as an expensive option when comparing digital transmission and routing systems. It is a premium networking solution, and clearly a superior system to its perceived competitors in many ways. Ultra-low latency, multiple layers of redundancy, high channel count, mixed media and data streams and superb reliability are all key Optocore traits.

However, in the case of the systems we supplied to Arena, Optocore not only offered all the required functionality, but was also the most cost-effective. Knowing where Optocore are heading in terms of product development, we at HD Pro Audio are able to continue to grow the brands UK presence in this vein.

New Dubai Airport Terminal passes STI-PA Measurements

The new Terminal 3 and Concourse 2 at Dubai International Airport have been commissioned last October. Prior the grand opening the Berlin based company Rahe-Kraft measured all halls for good speech intelligibility of the PA-system. One of the key tools was the portable Acoustilyzer AL1, which saved them a lot of time in their project; the STI-PA measurements could be completed faster than expected.

The German acoustic consulting company Rahe-Kraft was appointed to design, predict and commission the complete public address system for the new Dubai airport terminal. The system consists of approximately 4.000 ceiling loudspeakers, 600 passive arrays and about 140 active arrays. Only 18 active DSP-controlled loudspeakers service the huge baggage claim hall (235 x 220m).

Time-saving STI-PA measurement by Acoustilyzer
The commissioning of the system was conducted by Jakob Kraft personally. Due to the large distances, wired measurements were impossible in many areas; thus a handheld meter was the only choice for reliable measurements in these areas. After completing the project successfully Jakob Kraft reported: The AL1 with the STI-PA option for speech intelligibility measurement was an indispensable help at this important assignment. I was able to make several hundred STI-PA measurements in just one night only by myself. An operator in the main switch room enabled the STI-PA test signal from zone to zone, allowing me to verify the speech intelligibility at all assigned measurement positions. Jakob Kraft summarizes: In Dubai I learnt to appreciate the Acoustilyzer for such onsite projects. The typical STI-PA test results in the new terminal 3 are in the range from 0.50 0.65 STI. Thus since the opening of the airport, the public address system runs to the client's satisfaction.

britain's Peak Hire Ltd. Bolsters Its EAW Arsenal with Eight KF850 Series

britain's Peak Hire Ltd. Bolsters Its EAW Arsenal with Eight KF850 Series Virtual ArrayTM Modules and Eight SB1002 Subwoofers

Whitinsville, MA, USA, August 11, 2009 - Peak Hire Ltd., based in Cheltenham in Gloucester, England, serves as one of the U.K.'s leading sound and lighting contractors. They provide skilled technical support for productions, concerts, theaters, conferences, outdoor events, etc., throughout the U.K. and Europe, and their hire inventory of sound, lighting, rigging, power, set and stage equipment is varied and extensive. Recently, they bolstered their inventory of products from EAW, a world leader in audio system technology, with the purchase of eight EAW KF850 Series Virtual ArrayTM System Modules and eight EAW SB1002 Large Format Flyable Subwoofers.

Peak Hire's EAW arsenal was already sizeable, including 16 EAW KF730 Compact Line Array Modules and eight EAW SB730 Compact Line Array Subwoofers, along with a good stock of EAW JFX88 Compact Full-Range Loudspeakers, EAW JFX200i Compact Full-Range Loudspeakers and EAW SBX220 Compact Subwoofers. The purchase of KF850 and SB1002 units is a significant investment in large-scale EAW systems, further enhancing Peak Hire's commitment to their market sectors and clients and dedication to the EAW brand.

Peak Hire Managing Director Karl Ashman stated, "EAW has long been a staple in our inventory of sound reinforcement components, and over the years, our clients have always commented about the outstanding sound quality of their modules. That being said, we have increased our warehouse of EAW System Modules and Subwoofers to meet the equipment demands from our clients in live sound and corporate conferences, as well as theatrical productions."

About the KF850 Series Virtual Array System
The KF850 Series has been the touring system standard for well over ten years, being acceptable in more technical riders than any other loudspeaker. Its longevity is attested to by the fact that with over 10,000 units already out in the field, several hundred are still sold every year. Knowing customers still employ this workhorse every day, EAW engineers decided to modernize the touring classic with a significant performance upgrade featuring the latest proprietary technology and contemporary components. The resulting current KF850 iteration, the KF850z, has higher impact and fidelity than ever before.

About the SB1002 Large Format Flyable Subwoofer
The SB1002 is a large-format, high-output subwoofer that can be ground-stacked or easily flown via an integral rigging system. The mounting of the dual 18-inch cone drivers maximizes cone area and minimizes front area, providing acoustical performance and physical configuration well suited for creating large sub arrays. These custom drivers offer very large (4.5-inch) voice coils as well as powerful neodymium magnet structures that also reduce weight. The rigging system, similar to that of EAW KF760 Series line arrays, accommodates flown arrays of up to 12 SB1002 units. A handle on the rear upper corner of the SB1002 enclosure provides added guidance and convenient "push-pull" ability in the flying process.

EAS Installs Two Sites at ION Orchard Singapore with Audica Professional

Audica Professional MICROseries audio systems have been installed in two
high quality sites at the new ION Orchard complex in Singapore. The systems
were designed and installed in the Fish and Co. restaurant and at Epicentre,
an Apple Premium Reseller outlet, by Electro-Acoustics Systems Pte Ltd.,
Audica Professional's Key Installation Partner in Singapore.

Located at the gateway to Singapore's most prestigious Orchard Road shopping
strip, ION Orchard's award winning design was by leading architecture firm
Benoy, who brought us iconic malls such as the Bullring in Birmingham, UK.
ION Orchard is the retail component of the
retail-cum-super-luxury-residential Orchard Turn, a prime landmark project
jointly owned and managed by Singapore's CapitaLand Limited and Hong Kong's
Sun Hung Kai Properties. The development is strategically situated above the
Orchard Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station and will enjoy underground
connectivity to nearby buildings. When completed, the Orchard Turn
development will boast over 640,000 square feet of net letting space and
luxury homes.

The Epicentre Apple store required a system with flexibility for its retail
area and two training rooms, with the ability for a common background music
system for all 3 zones or for the training rooms to operate completely
independently, or linked just to each other but not the main retail system.
To provide this, Electro-Acoustics Systems used an Audica Professional
MICROzone controller/amplifier in each of the 3 zones and utilised its
'Line-2' facility, which provides a master in/out feed to all units on
Line-2, but with independent feeds on all other inputs.

The main retail area uses the master MICROzone, fed from a Biamp 301 mixer
which facilitates line and mic inputs. Three Audica Professional MICROpoint
loudspeakers are driven from the MICROzone's built in 2-channel amplifier.
An output from the MICROzone also drives an Audica Professional 4-channel
MICROplus power amplifier, which powers nine Audica Professional MICROdot
ceiling loudspeakers in a distributed configuration.

Each training room has a MICROzone, linked to the master on Line-2 for the
BGM feed. In these rooms the MICROzone is additionally controlled by an
Audica Professional WMR wall panel, which allows all MICROzone functions to
be controlled via the panel or by handheld infrared remote. The MICROzone's
built in amplifiers are then used to drive a pair of MICROdot ceiling
loudspeakers in each room. Another Biamp 301 mixer is used just for the
training rooms and, via a Kramer VM-2N audio distribution amp, can provide
mic and line input to either or both rooms. A wall plate in one of the rooms
facilitates local input for the room it is located in, or for both.

"I was really interested to see the configuration that EAS had employed to
provide the Epicentre solution", commented Audica Professional's Derek West.
"Simple yet flexible input to provide common or local feed as required to
multiple zones was key to our thinking for the facilities of the MICROzone.
This is a unique and very neat audio and control solution. With the store
being designed for the Apple products it sells, the Audica Professional
loudspeakers also provide a design statement very much in keeping with the
stylish hi-tech aesthetics".

Fish & Co. is a chain of premium fish restaurants, with locations throughout
Asia specialising in the finest ingredients served in an atmosphere that is
designed to feel casual and relaxed. Carefully co-ordinated colour schemes,
and use of sea ornaments, give a cheerful nautical setting. Requiring a
single zone system, Electro-Acoustics Systems installed an Audica
Professional MICROzone driving four surface-mount MICROpoint loudspeakers,
which provide good BGM quality to 70Hz. Input for the continuous playback of
the restaurants own music selection is provided by a 5-disc Marantz CC4001.

Good to Go: Yamaha's Powerful, Portable PA Systems Shed Weight, Offer Mor

Vaunted STAGEPAS Series Gets Two Smaller Siblings; Perfect for Keyboards

BUENA PARK, Calif. Yamaha's versatile STAGEPAS series of portable, yet powerful PA systems adds two new models, STAGEPAS 250M and STAGEPAS 150M. Like their highly praised counterparts, the STAGEPAS 500 and the STAGEPAS 300, the new models offer big, clear sound in a small package, along with numerous input options and easy-to-use operation.

Yamaha STAGEPAS 250M
"The STAGEPAS 250M and 150M deliver remarkable sound quality when used as monitors, though the acoustic output is high enough to use for sound reinforcement," said Wayne Hrabak, marketing manager, Live Sound, Yamaha Pro Audio & Combo Division. "These are great all-purpose cabinets and performers and musicians of all types will welcome their light weight and high output."

The STAGEPAS 250M and STAGESPAS 150M consist of a convenient, removable powered mixer and a speaker. They include twice as many microphone inputs as comparable compact PA systems on the market, along with more watts and less weight. The inclusion of a pole mount receptacle on the STAGEPAS 250M for stand mounting exemplifies Yamaha's attention to detail.

Both models also include several useful features designed for keyboard players, in addition to the great sound. Instead of typical keyboard amps, which are modeled on guitar amplifiers and sit on the floor with the controls knee-high, the removable STAGEPAS mixer can be placed in an accessible spot during gigs, allowing for easy sound tweaking.

In addition, a Stereo Link Out jack lets users connect to external amplifiers or powered loudspeakers and balanced ST SUB OUT lines link to a main mixer or recording device. Click Assign switches let performers listen to a click track through headphones or a monitor without intruding on the main mix, providing an excellent practice tool.

The STAGEPAS 250M is ideal for schools, churches, corporate multimedia presentations, solo performers, keyboardists and small musical ensembles. Easy-to-use, even for those who do not consider themselves to be sound experts, the built-in, yet detachable powered mixer comes with 10 channels and pumps out 250 watts of power. Line outputs let users connect with additional powered speakers or send the signal to a main mixer or recording device.

Capable of filling a relatively large club or room with sound, the STAGEPAS 250M also projects well outdoors. Among its advanced features, the powered mixer includes phantom power for condenser microphones, EQ and reverb, along with built-in compression/limiting controls, which helps tame unruly vocals and contributes to improved overall sound. The two-way, full-range speaker contains a 10-inch woofer and a one-inch titanium tweeter.

The STAGEPAS 150M also has a two-way loudspeaker and an eight channel, 150-watt powered mixer, which includes built-in EQ and reverb. The eight-inch woofer and one-inch titanium tweeter provide a surprisingly clear source of sound. Line outputs are available to connect to external amps, mixers and recording devices.

"Musicians and public speakers will appreciate the removable mixer, which puts all the controls within easy reach," said John Schauer, product manager, Live Sound. "And, clever routing in the mixers allows for easy feeds to a powerful headphone send, while balanced stereo line outputs provide a great way to get out to the main PA."

Fall Out Boy Goes Digital with Midas PRO6

Engineer Kyle Chirnside uses the Midas PRO6 Digital Console to achieve amazing analog sound quality with digital convenience and failsafe reliability.
Like any good punk-pop band, Fall Out Boy has made its reputation on hard work and solid musicianship. Relentless touring is the name of the game, and for the past five years, FOH Kyle Chirnside has been manning the controls, and the Midas PRO6 is Chirnside's console of choice for the current Fall Out Boy world tour.

"I've always been a Midas guy," states Chirnside. "Whenever I had a choice, I would have my XL4. But then I had the chance to test drive the XL8." That opportunity came with an invitation visit Metallica FOH engineer Big Mick Hughes during preparations for Fall Out Boy's autumn 2008 tour of the UK and Europe. "We were at his house, sitting around mixing Metallica tunes on the XL8, which was huge for me. I must have remixed that song 'Battery' a hundred times that day. I fell in love with the console. So when I heard Midas was developing a smaller, more affordable digital desk, I was totally into it." That console was the PRO6, which Chirnside and Fall Out Boy promptly took out on tour.
That first tour with the PRO6 proved to be a revelation. "Since I was a new user, I brought my trusty EL8s along for vocal processing, but I never touched them," Chirnside recalls. "Instead, I ended up using the console's internal 3 band compressors, which sound amazing. They really made all the vocals pop out and stay dominant in the mix from a whisper to a scream. For Pete Wentz's bass, the PRO6's corrective compressor is perfect on both the DI and SansAmp channels." At the output stage, Chirnside relies on the PRO6's internal Klark Teknik EQ section, which he describes as "quick and precise," to dial in the right sound for every act on the bill.
Clair Global supplied a PRO6 for Fall Out Boy's spring U.S. tour, which featured four support acts. "Even with five bands, we only used one desk," notes Chirnside. "It was easier and more cost effective than alternating between two consoles. It saved us a lot of money in renting another console and having a huge rack of outboard gear. It was a great opportunity for all these young engineers to be in a big show and mix on a digital desk. It was amazing to watch these rookie engineers just jump right in and get it."
When mixing live, Chirnside relies on the PRO6's POPulation groups for instant access to any part of his mix. "I use the POP Groups constantly," he says. "I have a drum group, a bass group, a guitar group, a vocal group and then my effects. That way, everything is right in front of me on the left-hand fader bank. It's a super simple setup, easy to set up and easy to run."
The PRO6's DL431 I/O module offers additional advantages. "It's basically a stage box, sort of like a snake head, but that's where the magic happens," says Chirnside. "The AD conversion and preamps are in there, and so you can actually plug a pair of headphones into the stage box, push a button and solo any channel. Great for troubleshooting." Audio connectivity from the DL431 to the PRO6 control surface consists of a pair of thin Cat5 cables, one of them redundant, eliminating the need to run a bulky copper snake. Similarly, redundant power supplies at the control surface and in the I/O and DSP modules ensure continuous operation even in the event of failure.
Chirnside notes the ease with which both seasoned and rookie engineers take to Midas digital desks. Each band's engineer would simply load his show file between acts, do a quick mic check and be ready to go. "The PRO6 is laid out like an analog desk, so you're reaching in the same direction you always have. And if you can't figure it out, there's a screen right there that tells you what you need to know. These young engineers for our opening acts, on their first major tour -- they had it nailed within a couple days. It was great to watch."
With its comprehensive latency management system that ensures absolute phase coherency no matter how the audio stream is routed and processed, it's no surprise that the thing that impresses Kyle Chirnside most about Midas digital is its sound quality. "I've tried just about every digital desk out there, and they all have that digital sound. Stale, clinical and boring," he states. "The PRO6 is just different. Midas found a way to take the sound of an XL4 and transfer it to the digital domain. It has all the advantages of digital, but it sounds like a Midas. And that's all that matters."

Alcons Audio now shipping the LR7Bass micro line-array bass

3-CDs-high-by-3-CDs-wide sized macro-bass

Alcons Audio now shipping the LR7Bass micro line-array bass

As a further extension of its very successful L-series of products, Alcons is now shipping the LR7Bass.
The LR7B is a bass-system, designed as low-frequency extension of the LR7 micro pro-ribbon line-array system, in both permanent and portable applications.

Featuring a single 12 long excursion woofer with Neodymium magnet structure in bandpass loading configuration, the LR7B delivers high quality, high output bass response from a micro-sized and weight efficient package, measuring only 3 CDs wide by 3-CDs high.

The extended frequency response of the dual tuning enables the LR7B to be used as mid-bass reinforcement (80Hz-160Hz), full-range bass extension (45Hz-160Hz) or subwoofer (45Hz-75Hz); All in both flown as well as stacked application.

Main attention was paid to the concentric band-pass configuration, consisting of 4 + 1 individual reflex vents in circular configuration, offering increased efficiency bass response in full-space (flown) and in half-space (stacked) applications.
Philip Dr.Phil de Haan, head of Alcons Audio R&D: In order to optimize the response, reducing distortion even further, we designed a reflex-vent muffler, which dampens the reflex vent resonance induced in the lower-tuned ports. The result is a very clean low-mid and broad-band bass response with an RMS output of 124dB.

As weight was one of the critical design criteria, the cabinet is made of 15mm/0.6in Birch wood with very clever bracing for a lightweight yet rigid construction. In combination with the 12 woofers Neodymium magnet structure, the result is a total weight of only 19kg / 41.8lb including all flying hardware.

The integrated 3-point flying system matches the LR7s Androgyn flying system, which can transform the LR7s asymmetrical cabinet into a symmetrical system, for optimal stereo response.
contd)

As in all Alcons systems, the Signal Integrity Sensing (SIS) pre-wiring ensures complete cable/connector compensation between the LR7B and ALC amplified-controller, for very tight and accurate bass response. This results in a damping factor of 10.000 at the speaker terminals of the LR7B.

In order to deliver maximum sound quality and output power with dedicated and inaudible (power and excursion) protection (SDP circuit), the LR7Bass is to be used in combination with an ALC amplified loudspeaker controller.

The LR7B is finished with Alcons Durotect coating, comes with a 6 years limited warranty and is part of the The Ribbon Network inventory; Alcons global dry-hire network.

EAW Products Selected for Pride Barcelona 09

EAW Loudspeakers, Subwoofers and Processors provide powerful sound for live music and DJs at gigantic GLBT pride event

Whitinsville, MA, USA, August 10, 2009 - Leading Spanish multi-media/audio provider FOCUS, S.A. was recently contracted to furnish sound reinforcement for Pride Barcelona 09, a huge GLBT event attended by an estimated 15,000 people. The event was held June 28 at Avenida Maria Cristina in Barcelona, Spain. As they often do, FOCUS turned to EAW, a world leader in audio system solutions, for loudspeakers and processors for the night's main stage concert, which featured several live musical artists and DJs performing well into the early hours of the morning.

The main P.A. system consisted of 16 EAW KF760 Line Array Modules (eight on each side of the stage), eight EAW KF730 Compact Line Array Modules (four on each side) and 16 EAW SB1000z Large Format Subwoofers, all processed by EAW UX8800 Digital Signal Processors. Onstage sound for the bands was accomplished with eight EAW JFX260i Compact Full-Range Loudspeakers, and for stage monitoring for the DJs, FOCUS used two side fills formed by one EAW SB730 Compact Line Array Subwoofer and two JFX260i modules per side. All components were amplified by Lab.gruppen FP Series amplifiers, and FOCUS used Smaart Live 5.4 for the adjustment and alignment of the system.

Pepe Ferrer of FOCUS, S.A., stated, "We are big supporters of EAW's products and technological innovations. For this event, we were particularly delighted that the UX8800 gave us access to EAW's proprietary Gunness Focusing Technology. That allowed us to phase all of the EAW speakers in very specific ways, giving us the possibility of multiple configurations."
